Letters from My Guitar Students: Venkat Venkatnarayan

Like most folks, I wanted to play like the lead guitarist that I saw in one of the rock concerts as a teenager years ago!. So bought an acoustic guitar (it was cheap :) and tried to learn from some random folks. My practice did not last long and started doubting if I can ever get close to playing a decent gig...

Well, years later I landed up in SFO. And was fortunate to run into Jay about 2 years ago. Not only did he explain the basics in very simple terms, more importantly he got my confidence back. What amazed me was his solid knowledge of music in general - he is obviously great when it comes to guitar, but it is essential that someone has a great understanding of how different instruments and voice comes together to create magic! ... You would need that as a rock star in a band some day :). It is as if he has talent in his genes given that he comes from an illustrious family of musicians !

I can humbly say that I have come a long way ahead .. something that I could not even imagine a few years ago. Jay has this amazing ability to hone your techniques and at the same time make you enjoy your music. In fact, after the first few weeks itself, he started to encourage me to write my own songs and play. I thought he was kidding at first, but soon realized that this is so crucial in understanding and appreciating rhythm. Week after week and months after months, he has patiently helped me move forward ... with rock solid basics, rhythm techniques and lead playing. Throughout the 2 years, he has explained theory in context of different songs and techniques, that it sinks right in!

Now, though I am neck deep with responsibilities as a software programmer in the valley and as a dad, I look forward to my 30 mins of 1-1 time with my Fender Strat every day. Combining regular practice with Jay's amazing patience, I can now harbor serious hopes of someday playing half as good as Mr.Gilmour!
